Orange Man Charged with Aggravated Assault, Weapons Offenses

Orange NJ Aggravated Assault LawyerAfter a recent dispute in Orange, New Jersey resulted in a shooting, a local man is facing charges for aggravated assault, unlawful possession of a weapon, and associated weapons offenses.

The aforementioned incident occurred at approximately 10:30 a.m. on Monday, July 4th in the vicinity of Washington and High streets. According to city authorities, 27-year-old Orange resident Quddus Widener is accused of attacking a 27-year-old victim, who remains unidentified. The victim was shot in the buttocks but received medical care at University Hospital in Newark and is expected to fully recover.

Widener was subsequently charged with aggravated assault, unlawful possession of a weapon, and other weapons offenses. Among the charges against him, unlawful possession of a weapon is classified as a second degree crime when the weapon in question is a firearm. Specifically, unlawful possession of a handgun is punishable by a sentence to serve between 5 and 10 years in New Jersey State Prison. In addition, these charges are governed by New Jersey’s Graves Act, which requires the imposition of a mandatory term of imprisonment with a minimum period of parole ineligibility fixed at, or between, one-third and one-half of a sentence imposed, or 3 years, whichever is greater.

As for the aggravated assault charges, the degree of the charges will be determined by a number of factors, including the presence of a weapon (in this case, a handgun) and the extent of the victim’s injuries (bodily injury, serious bodily injury, or significant bodily injury).
